Conversion of research reactors from HEU (Highly Enriched Uranium) to LEU (Low-Enriched Uranium) fuel

  • Research and services for nuclear energy
  • Competencies in the field of nuclear fuel cycle

We have developed fuel based on uranium-zirconium carbonitride. Its thermal conductivity is several times higher than that of uranium dioxide (UO2), its tensile strength is nearly three times higher, and its fuel swelling is lower than the industry standard for UO2. This development allows for the conversion of research nuclear facilities from highly enriched uranium fuel to low-enriched uranium fuel without any modifications to the existing reactor design.

We have also developed technologies for metallic fuel based on metallic uranium and alloys containing zirconium, niobium, and molybdenum. These technologies have been successfully applied in the conversion of the IVG.1M reactor in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Today, these technologies are scalable and can be applied in all countries where research reactors operate with HEU fuel.

  • Possibility to develop new reactor system designs and fuel elements that ensure high economic efficiency and operational safety
  • Patented technologies for the conversion from highly enriched uranium fuel to low-enriched uranium fuel, while maintaining the required uranium loading and without modifications to the reactor designs
